Update: server move

26 May
2010

Sorry, folks: we’re moving.

Our upstream hosts (the geeks who farm the servers) have not been able to fix the rather wonky DNS issues that have been causing roving blackouts to surfers trying to access your sites, and yesterday they pulled the CPanel backup module from my despairing grasp. Can’t do backups… what?

Since this is the tail end of a number of other issues (PHP errors, slow service response time, and so forth), I’m afraid we’re hitching up the covered wagons and we’re headed to our new home.

If you are a client of mine and you need to do anything, I’ll contact you.

If you don’t hear from me, I’ll be doing the move myself, and you should not experience more than an hour’s outage.

Do contact me if you need anything.

Yesterday I began the process of moving by backing up all the sites I have keys for. Today I continue.

The process is made ridiculous by the upstream hosts, who have not only removed the backup option, but yesterday they had my home IP blocked, and today I have no access to Cpanel’s phpMyAdmin, which I would otherwise use to retrieve databases.

Once we’re all backed-up (one way or t’other), I upload the files to the new site (kind of like putting a copy of your furniture and belongings into a new apartment for you), hook everything up, and then as the last step, we flip the “addressing” switch, or DNS settings for each domain through the registrar.

For most folks, this will be a seamless process, wherein your site will look and behave as it did before (but without the wonky DNS issues), and your login details will not have changed. You might not even see a second’s down time.

For folks who manage some functions of their own site, I’ll be contacting you and letting you what to do.

Sorry for the upset, folks. I don’t know why the old host started withholding services, but you can bet I’ll be chasing them for a refund once I’ve made the move.
